If you didn’t already know, Fox has a brand new, live-actionX-Men TV seriesheading to the small screen later this year. And now we have the trailer to prove it. The network has released the first, full-length trailer for the show, which has officially been titledThe Gifted, and it very much looks like an authentic addition to theX-Menuniverse.

Fox dropped the trailer right on schedule, as they had previously released a very brief teaser forThe Gifted, promising that the full trailer was on the way. This show has largely been a mystery up till now and this trailer gives us a very good sense of what this show is going to look like, feel like and be about. What is perhaps most interesting is the reveal that Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer) is actually a government agent who hunts down mutants, but finds out that his own kids actually have mutant powers. This is similar to what we have seen with William Stryker inX2, though this seems to be a more sympathetic take.

The Giftedcenters on a suburban couple, Reed and Caitlin Strucker, whose lives are shaken up by the sudden discovery that their children, Lauren and Andy Strucker, possessmutant powers. They are then forced to go on the run from a hostile government, which is a big focus of this first trailer. The family joins up with an underground network of mutants, several of which we can see in the video, and they must fight to survive. TheX-Menfranchise has typically focused a lot on the mutant’s perspective and, while this show will clearly include that, it looks likeThe Giftedwill be giving us a whole lot of human perspective as well.

We still can’t be totally certain how this show fits in with the overallX-Mentimeline, but this trailer did give us some clues. At one point, one of the mutants says, “The X-Men. The brotherhood. We don’t even know if they exist anymore.” That implies that it takes place at a time when, at least publicly, theX-Menhave disbanded, which is an interesting angle. It is also worth saying that, even though this is TV and not a high-budget movie,The Giftedlooks like it will be pretty effects-heavy and won’t skimp on the action.

The pilot episode ofThe Giftedis directed by long timeX-Menmovie director Bryan Singer. Fox has yet to announce an exact premiere date for the series, but it will debut during the upcoming fall TV season. The show comes from the mind of Matt Nix (Burn Notice), with Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, Jim Chory and Marvel TV President Jeph Loeb all serving as executive producers on the project. The series stars Stephen Moyer as Reed Strucker, Amy Acker as Caitlin Strucker, Sean Teale as Marcos Diaz/Eclipse, Jamie Chung as Clarice Fong/Blink, Coby Bell as Jace Turner, Emma Dumont as Lorna Dane/Polaris, Blair Redford as John Proudstar/Thunderbird, Natalie Alyn Lind as Lauren Strucker and Percy Hynes White as Andy Strucker.Stan Lee’s cameohas already been shot as well.
