FAST (free ad-supported TV) services have gained significant popularity in the US, with platforms such asThe Roku Channel,Pluto TV, andTubiemerging as top competitors in the space.

Major tech companies have also ventured into providing FAST services. In 2023, Google TV introduced its FAST channels, later rebranded asFreeplay. Samsung offersSamsung TV Plus, while Amazon’s service, initially known as IMDb TV, was renamedAmazon Freeveein 2022.

However, Amazon announced last year that it was shutting down Freevee to shift its entire focus to building Prime Video. But it didn’t specify exactly when Freevee would shut down. Now, Amazon has finally confirmed that Freevee will shut down this August, less than a month away.

This news was shared by Amazon through the latest Freevee app update (viaAFTV News). Amazon states users can “Continue watching your favorite Freevee Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.”

How to get two free Kindle e-books this July as a Prime member

As an Amazon Prime member, you can claim two free Kindle e-books in July. Here’s how.

All of Freevee’s content is now on Prime Video

Prime Video has a new “Watch for Free” category available alongside all its paid content

Although the Freevee app will no longer be accessible after August, none of its content will be lost. Last year, Amazon added all of Freevee’s content to Prime Video, allowing users to continue watching it for free. This includes Freevee Originals and its library of free movies and TV shows.

While Prime Video typically requires an Amazon Prime subscription to access most content, Freevee’s shows and movies on Prime Video can be watched for free with ads, without a subscription. Freevee content appears on Prime Video under the “Watch for Free” category on both the app and website.

Amazon clearly hopes this change will encourage Freevee users to consider signing up for a Prime membership, if they haven’t already.

In the app notice sent to Freevee users, Amazon states, “Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies, and Live TV.” In 2024, Amazon announced it would shut down Freevee in 2025, citing the decision to “phase out Freevee branding” as a way to “deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers.”

If you have the Freevee app on your smartphone or TV, you can continue using it through July, but it will stop working in August. If you haven’t tried Prime Video before, you can download it for free from your TV’s app store or from the App Store and Google Play Store on your mobile device.

From a business standpoint, Amazon’s decision to phase out Freevee and transfer its content to Prime Video makes sense. Any Freevee user who wants to keep watching free shows or movies now needs to browse Prime Video, which offers a wide selection of paid content through its Prime membership and additional paid channels. Amazon clearly hopes this change will encourage Freevee users to consider signing up for a Prime membership, if they haven’t already.
