Elden Ring’s Legacy and Expanding Universe
With nearly 30 million copies sold as undeniable proof of its success, Elden Ring’s legacy extends beyond the 2022 game released for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Following the massive success of its expansionShadow of the Erdtree, the franchise is set to receive a multiplayer spin-off, Nightreign, later this year—another highly anticipated project.

And as often happens, such a triumph makes the transition to other media an attractive prospect. In the case of Elden Ring, this has now been confirmed by its creator.
During theIGN Fan Fest 2025, George R. R. Martin revealed thatElden Ringis already being developed for the big screen.

Elden Ring Movie Confirmed by George R. R. Martin
“Well, I can’t say much for now, but discussions are already underway to make an Elden Ring movie,” the writer stated.
Martin, who contributed to the creation ofElden Ring, admitted that his involvement in the film is uncertain due to an overdue commitment—The Winds of Winter, the next book in theGame of Thronessaga.

“I’m limited in what I can take on,” he acknowledged. “Every time I think about it, I ask myself, ‘How have I fallen more than 13 years behind?’ I don’t know, but the days just fly by.”
Martin took the situation with humor, despite some already speculating that he will never finish the book: “They might be right, but I’m still alive and kicking!”

It’s worth remembering that Martin created the foundation upon which the game was built—specifically, the ancient history of the world where the adventure takes place.
“FromSoftware asked me to create the backstory forElden Ring. It’s something I’ve done before with A Song of Ice and Fire—building a world to tell a story within,” the author explained.
“What happened 5,000 or 10,000 years before the events of Elden Ring? That’s what I wanted to explore, based on my ideas about magic and runes,” he added.
According to Martin, the FromSoftware team frequently met with him, refined the game, and returned to discuss more ideas—shapingElden Ringtogether.
The writer also revealed that his contribution toElden Ringwas so extensive that many ideas were left unused. Perhaps they could take shape in a hypotheticalElden Ring 2, though Martin remains tight-lipped: “I won’t say a word.”
