Popularly known for being the master of horror and suspense, with a number of spine-tingling tales under his belt, even Stephen King was once blindsided by unexpected enchantment. Reading J.K. Rowling’s firstHarry Potterbook, King claimed to be “moderately impressed” with it. Well, it’s hardly the reaction you’d expect from a literary giant, towards a beloved piece of literature.

However, fate took a turn when a major road accident left Stephen King bedridden on painkillers, and he found himself committing to the rest of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding saga. What followed was a magical transformation, as King became not just a reader, but an avid fan, showering praises on Rowling for being a literary genius.
A Serious Road Accident Led Stephen King to Unravel the Magic ofHarry Potter
Initially, when readers approach a piece of literature, they often seem skeptical about it. Similarly, when Stephen King started reading J.K. Rowling’sHarry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,he felt the first book was merely a charming addition to the literary landscape. So much so, that King found it less than appealing, compared to the hype surrounding the magical saga (viaBook Marks)
I read the first novel in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, in April 1999 and was only moderately impressed.

However, a severe road accident changed everything forStephen King. Confined to his home, surviving on painkillers, King turned to literature to find solace. It was during this period of recovery that the horror genre author turned to therest of theHarry Potternovels. Diving into a world filled with magic, friendship, and courage, King noted how his perspective changed.
But in April 1999 I was pretty much all right. Two months later I was involved in a serious road accident that necessitated a long and painful period of recuperation. During the early part of this period, I read Potters 2 and 3 and found myself a lot more than moderately wowed.

As he turned the pages ofChamber of SecretsandPrisoner of Azkaban,Stephen King found himself truly enchanted. The author, much like the rest of us, fell in love with the themes of loss, identity, and the struggle between good and evil. Moreover, the layered characters—Ron Weasley’s loyalty and Hermione Granger’s resilience, resonated deeply with him.
Stephen King Had High Praise for J.K. Rowling After Completing theHarry PotterNovels
Turning pages after pages, Stephen King not only got hooked on the enchanting story, but each book became a spellbinding journey for him, that made him feel like Hogwarts is his home. By the time he reached the pages of theGoblet of Fire,King was not just impressed, he was transformed. Appreciating J.K. Rowling’s rich storytelling,The Shiningauthorshowered praises on her.
The fantasy writer’s job is to conduct the willing reader from mundanity to magic. This is a feat of which only a superior imagination is capable, and Rowling possesses such equipment.

Stephen King’s admiration forJ.K. Rowlingextended beyond her storytelling. He praised her ability to craft relatable characters who faced moral dilemmas while comparing her works to the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien’sLord of the Ringstrilogy, C. S. Lewis’sNarniabooks, and J. M. Barrie’sPeter Pan. So it seems that what began as a mere curiosity, finally blossomed into a profound appreciation for a narrative that has captured the hearts of millions (not without a cause).
