Should Bryan Singer Direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3?

Bryan Singer helped to bring the comic book movie genre to where it is now with the release ofX-Menin 2000. And his latest directorial effortBohemian Rhapsodyis nominated and could possible win Best Picture at the Oscars (though the fact that he got fired and is accused of underage sexual misconduct by numerous individuals may derail its chances). So, could he help Marvel Studios raiseGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3from the ashes? The obvious answer is no. But on merit alone, Bryan Singer might not have been such a bad choice, if there wasn’t so much controversy surrounding the guy.

Singer has been attached to theX-Menfranchise since its big screen inception, and has had great success bringing diverse characters together on the big screen, while also crafting box office success in the process. With the Disney and Fox deal set to close soon, it might not be a bad idea to bring Singer in to tackle a Marvel Cinematic Universe project that fans can’t wait to see. Especially since no one else wants the job, and Singer’s past has already been revealed, so there’s no old tweets to dig up.

Bryan Singer’sX-MenandX2have been praised for their tight storylines and their close attention to the source material, and he later returned to the franchise for the blockbuster hitX-Men: Days of Future Past, which many consider the best in the series, and the somewhat disappointing previous entryX-Men: Apocalypse. Great storytelling and attention to detail are also things that James Gunn brought to theGuardians of the Galaxyfranchise. Now that Gunn is out of the picture after getting fired last summer,Disneyand Marvel Studios are looking for a new director to take on the third and final movie in the trilogy.Bryan Singercould come on board to breathe new life into the franchise, just like he did withX-Men.

Obviously,the success of Bohemian Rhapsodymight entice Disney to work with Bryan Singer onGuardians of the Galaxy 3. The Queen movie is now the highest grossing music biopic of all time, surpassing $834 million globally. Though fired, almost the entire movie was shot and finished before Bryan Singer was removed from set. Some estimate that she shot at least 87% of the popular biopic. Millennium Films has already tapped Singer to direct the upcomingRed Sonjamovie based on the success of the Queen biopic alone, which could be a scheduling hurdle with Marvel Studios, but much likeBohemian Rhapsody, Singer might be able to leave that project early to tackleGuardians of the Galaxy 3.

Bryan Singer has been praised for his work on theX-Menfranchise and his 1995 movieThe Usual Suspects. Singer was able to take Christopher McQuarrie’s script and make it his own while directing successful actors like Kevin Spacey and Benicio del Toro, who has been involved with theGuardians of the Galaxyfranchise. Singer has the ability to bring large casts together to craft an engaging story, which is something thatGuardians of the Galaxy 3is going to need, especially considering how large the cast is. With that being said, we’re going to have to wait until afterAvengers: Endgameis released tosee how many surviving Guardians there are.

Singer also directed the superhero epicSuperman Returns, which showed that he could stay true to Richard Donner’s original vision of the character as seen in the 1978 classic while bringing is own unique touches to the iconic title. This will be especially helpful in that if he were to take the job, Singer would most likley be working from James Gunn’s already finished script. And he could help bring the original vision to life, assuring that the tone and feel of the previous two movies wasn’t lost in translation.

2016’sX-Men: Apocalypsewasn’t as well-received upon its release as first first three efforts in the franchise, which could mean that Bryan Singer needs achange of pace in the comic book/superhero genreandGuardians of the Galaxy 3could be the perfect opportunity for the director to spread his wings. The Guardians franchise is already huge and even has its own ride at Disneyland, so Singer could be the right man to bring the third and final installment to the big screen. After the firing of James Gunn and the success ofFox’sBohemian Rhapsody, anything is possible.
