J.J. Abrams Calls ‘Duster’ a “Crazy Story”

With nods tovarious 70s crime filmslike the 1978 Ryan O’Neal movieThe Driver,Dusteris clearly hoping to capitalize on nostalgia with its retro setting and music, as HBO shows likeThe Deuce,Vinyl, andMinxhave done in the past. Abrams recently told The Hollywood Reporter that his goal is to tell a “crazy story,” and that the whole series stemmed from a single image in his head:

“I had this image of a phone in the middle of the desert and a car driving up, and a guy getting on the phone to find out where he was meant to go next. It implied some kind of crazy intrigue, and I didn’t know what the answer was, but I knew it was compelling.”

Josh Holloway

“LaToya and I started talking about who this guy might be,” he continued. “I always knew there would be an FBI agent who showed up. But it wasn’t until we started talking about what her story is, that we started building this story towards something that felt twisty and turn-y and ultimately really satisfying.”

Dusteris just the first of many projects Abrams has in play with Max and Warner Bros., as back in 2019 he signed a five-year agreement with them worth $500 million dollars. In addition to Holloway and Hilson, the show also stars the incomparable Keith David, Sydney Elisabeth, Corbin Bernsen, Greg Grunberg, Camille Guaty, and Asivak Koostachin.

The eight-episode series debuts on Thursday, May 15 at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT on Max, with episodes airing weekly until its conclusion on July 02, 2025.
