Quick Links
Creating a unique build inMonster Hunter Wildscan be somewhat difficult to get started with, given how many weapons, armor, and decorations you can have per piece of gear. There are plenty of damage-dealing builds that allow you to hunt monsters effectively and quickly, but there aren’t many tank builds available, either.
Most of the available weapons won’t allow you to create a build that has you in a monster’s face, constantly taking aggro and shielding the party from the onslaught it will unleash. Luckily, there is one weapon that can handle the task, and that is where the Lance comes into play.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Dragon Piercer Bow Build
Utilize the bow’s most powerful attack as often as possible.
Craft the Best Lance For Your Playstyle
The Artian Weapons will be the best bet for this build to bring out the most the Lance can offer.
Getting started with this tank build, you’ll want to craft one of two versions of the Skyscraper Lance. If you have the spare weapon decorations, you can also craft both versions and bring them as both of your available weapons on a hunt. This will allow you to adjust how you play with the build on the fly and give you some more options. But the first version of the weapon you’ll want is the poison element Skyscraper and the second will be the paralysis version.
Weapon Name
Decorations
Skill Description
Skyscraper
(Poison Version)
Guardian/Ironwall Jewel [3]
Temporarily increases attack power after executing a perfectly timed guard.
Reduces knockbacks and stamina depletion while guarding.
Shield/Ironwall Jewel [3]
Allows you to guard against ordinarily unblockable attacks.
Poison/Ironwall Jewel [3]
Extends the duration of your poison’s effect on monsters.
(Paralysis Version)
Guardian/Handicraft Jewel [3]
Extends the weapon sharpness gauge.
Paralyzer Jewel [3]
Increases the rate of paralysis buildup.
Shield Jewel [3]
These two variants of the weapon will let you constantly deal damage over time to a monster or stun a monster frequently. The poison version of Skyscraper is the main weapon you’ll want to use but the paralysis version is a solid backup weapon for monsters that are moving around too much. Bringing both will allow you to lock down the monster and allow your party to output more damage.
Crafting Your Armor
The armor you’ll want to craft will have the most effective defensive skills available while on hunts.
For the armor needed to build the tank, you will need a mix of higher-rank armor and some mid-rank armor. This is because the Rank 6 armor is going to have all the equipment skills you’ll want for your Lance. The Arkvulcan Mail pieces will have a set of skills that will keep the monster’s focus on you as often as possible. Pieces of gear can be upgraded with armor spheres as well, but the build focuses on frequently keeping your shield up when the monster throws out an attack.
Arkvulcan Helm B
Convert Element
After taking elemental damage, temporarily grants you dragon element effects.
Arkvulvan Mail B
Weakness Exploit
Increases the affinity of attacks that exploit a monster’s weak points and wounds.
Doshaguma Braces B
Stun Resistance
Reduces the duration of stun.
Stamina Surge
Speeds up stamina recovery.
Melahoa Folia A
Recovery Up
Increases the amount recovered when restoring health.
Bleeding resistance
Grants protection against bleeding.
Guardian Ebony Greaves B
Grants protection against monster roars.
Divine Blessing
Has a predetermined chance of reducing the damage you take.
Defense Charm IV
Increases defense. It also improves resistances at higher levels.
Rocksteady Mantle
Negates damage reactions, protects hearing, grants wind and remor resistance, and reduces damage.
All of this gear combined will allow you to gain the upper hand against monsters. You’ll have various buffs to your overall resistances to keep yourself active and alive during hunts. The Melahoa Folia will be a very nice bonus to recovering any lost health as well as provide a nice bit of protection against bleed status effects. The biggest stat boost will come from the Defense Charm at its maximum level. This will almost entirely provide you with the fully leveled Defense Boost skill on its own, allowing you to fill out the rest of the levels with armor decorations.

Equipping Armor Decorations
Now that you have the armor crafted you’ll only need to get the proper jewels into them.
Armor Decoration
Tenderizer Jewel [3]
Defense Jewel [1]
Protection Jewel [1]
Refresh Jewel [2]
Earplugs Jewel [2]
One of the most important parts of this tank build for the Lance is going to be getting these armor decorations. While some of the rank 3 jewel slots aren’t using a rank 3 jewel, you’ll still be getting the maximum level out of some of these extremely useful skills. At first, it will seem like a slight waste, but when you get into a hunt, you’ll realize that the combination of these skills will make you a wall to protect your allies while you take the brunt of a monster’s damage.
The rank 1 defense jewels might be a questionable decision, but all three of them will get that Defense Boost skill up to level 7. At level 7, you will get a 10% bonus to defense and a +35 bonus to all elemental resistances. This increase is paramount to being a tank and will provide more to your build than any full 5-piece set of gear.

While most builds might avoid the Earplugs Jewel you’ll want the full three levels out of the skill for the build. You’ll be able to attack the monster and maintain attention on yourself with the bonus that the helm, mail, and braces will provide while ignoring the periodic monster roars throughout the fight. Both of these skills combined will be key to keeping a monster on your tail.
The tank build for the Lance weapon is going to turn you into a literal shield. You can easily keep monster aggro, and with some Lure Pods, you’ll ensure that it will always look in your direction during hunts. The combination of all the guard jewels in the weapons you will craft will also allow you to block any attack that comes your way. The support jewels that provide Stamina Surge and Recovery Up will keep you alive while the monster keeps you in its sights. While this is a fairly straightforward build, it is extremely useful when taking on bigger and more aggressive monsters.
