For many years,The Walking Dead’sNegan was a character not to be messed with and was the one putting many fan-favorite characters on course for a date with his beloved Lucille. However, after being defeated by Rick and co, Negan has been a somewhat reformed character, and now, in the finale of spin-off seriesDead City, he is facing a very uncertain future. ActorJeffrey Dean Morgan, a fan-favorite himself in whatever role he plays, spoke toEntertainment Weeklyahead of the actor’s strike about the predicament Negan finds himself in at the end of season one. He said:

“I think he thinks he’s f*cked. He’s in a position that he didn’t anticipate being in — certainly…. Yeah, [the Dama]’s got Negan. She’s a bit of a chess player and I don’t think Negan was prepared for her. I think he was prepared for Željko’s character [the Croat] and knows at least who he is and what he’s going to bring to the table, so can anticipate that. But he did not anticipate what the Dama is bringing to the table. And so I think that what Negan is seeing — and you can see the wheels turning — I don’t think he sees a way out right now.

Any time he can get put into a corner, fun things are going to happen. And so now we leave off here with Negan in a corner and we’ll get to tell the story of him trying to get out of it. Because he’s in a bad position right now, and he knows it. That’s a rare position for him, other than when he was in jail for, you know, 10 years in Alexandria.”

After the final episode ofDead City, both Morgan and co-star Lauren Cohan hinted that they believed their new series could run for multiple seasons. The Walking Deadpanel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con confirmed that the pair will be returning for at least one more season, and that means there is plenty more story to be told.

Exactly what that story will look like is going to be a little while in the making, as with both writers and actors now on strike, everything had mostly ground to a halt in the world of Hollywood movies and TV shows. However, the season finale ofDead Cityhas left plenty of food for thought as to how Negan can get himself out of his current position. No doubt it will involve violence, and many people could cry, but it is highly unlikely that Negan will be one doing the crying.

The Walking Dead: Dead Cityhas been a big boost to the franchise, pulling in strong ratings compared to the last season of the flagship show, which came to an end late last year. WithDaryl Dixonandthe Rick Grimes seriesThe Ones Who Livestill to come,The Walking Deadwill continue to shamble on until at least the end of 2024.
