Some have already criticized the casting of Corenswet, paying particular attention to the actor’s close resemblance to Henry Cavill. Something which director James Gunn was reportedly had no problem with.

But really, can an actor cast as Superman be criticizedfor looking too much like Superman? Many certainly don’t think so…

Overall, fans of Henry Cavill’s iteration of the Man of Steel continue to be dissatisfied with the way the actor, and the character,were treated during much of his timein the red cape. And, however, you might feel about the DC movies he starred in, it’s difficult to argue that much of it was wasted potential.

Known for roles in the likes ofPearl,The Politician,We Own This City, andHollywood, David Corenswet will see his star launched into the stratosphere when he takes the lead inSuperman: Legacy, which will reboot the DC icon and kick-start James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU.

“Superman: Legacytells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” the official synopsis forSuperman: Legacyreads. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Alongside Corenswet as Superman aka Clark Kent, it has also now been confirmed that Emmy Award winner andThe Marvelous Mrs. Maiselstar Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane in theSupermanreboot. The casting process for the iconic pairhas been going on for months, with Corenswet beating out the likes ofThe GreatandMad Max: Fury Roadstar Nicholas Hoult andGrantchester’sTom Brittney, while Brosnahan was up for the role of Lois Lane againstSex Education’sEmma Mackey andBridgertonstar Phoebe Dynevor.

Superman: Legacywill be written and directed byGuardians of the GalaxyandThe Suicide Squadfilmmaker James Gunn, who recently revealed the qualities he looked for in his Man of Steel. “It’s hard, but we’re looking,“Gunn said earlier this year. “And we actually have some really great choices, which I’m excited about. But it has to be somebody who has all of the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien. It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has. And it has to be somebody that you want to give a hug.”

Superman: Legacyis scheduled for release on August 23, 2025.
