The long-awaitedGod of Waradaptation forPrime Videois officially moving forward, and its first season will dive straight into the Norse storyline introduced in the acclaimed 2018 video game — a narrative centered on the powerful and emotional bond between Kratos and his son Atreus.
A New Vision for God of War: Not a Copy-Paste
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore confirmed the news during a San Diego Comic-Con 2025 interview, revealing that the series is currently in the writing phase and won’t begin filming until sometime in 2026. Moore also shared that Cory Barlog, the creative director behind the game, is directly involved in the project — calling him “a genius.”
Moore made it clear: this won’t be a shot-for-shot remake. Instead, the series will aim to capture theemotional coreand mythological depth of the original, while allowing room for creative freedom.
“We’re not doing a direct copy of the game, but we’re not straying far from it either,” he explained.
The goal is to stay true to the heart of Kratos and Atreus’ epic journey through the Nine Realms — one filled with inner demons and vengeful Norse gods.
Though this marks Moore’s first time adapting a video game, he admitted he was “blown away by the mythological and emotional richness” created by Santa Monica Studio.

Starting with the Norse arc is no coincidence. The 2018 reboot marked a bold shift for the franchise, moving away from its Greek-mythology roots toward a more introspective and emotionally driven story. Barlog’s involvement ensures tonal consistency and respect for the elements that turned the games into a cultural phenomenon — winning multiple awards for narrative and direction.
