Who Is Sephiroth?
Sephiroth is the main antagonist of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. However, he wasn’t always evil. Before his time as the villain, Sephiroth was actually a renowned soldier fighting for Shinra. He was the most well-known of the Shinra and was the person people thought of when they thought of Shinra’s SOLDIER program. He wasthewar hero everyone loved and he became an instant celebrity among those who swore to protect. Sephiroth was the best of the best when it came to fighting, and once he figured out why, he lost all his humanity.
What Turned Sephiroth Evil?
Sephiroth turned evil during what is known as the Nibelheim Incident. This is one of the first things that you will witness during a playthrough of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (unless you skip chapter 1) and is a key turning point in the game Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core. Sephiroth was sent to Nibelheim (the hometown ofCloudandTifa) along withZackand an infantry team to investigate a reactor. Once the group made it to the mako reactor, Sephiroth found remnants of an experiment done by Professor Hojo. Upon further inspection, Sephiroth finds a pod labeled “Jenova,” the name of his mother. Considering he knew he wasn’t like everyone else in Shinra or the SOLDIER program, he began to wonder if he was created by Hojo.
After leaving the reactor, Sephiroth goes to the Shinra Manor and pours over the notes left by Hojo, slowly learning the truth about who he really is—a creation of Shinra. It is revealed that Sephiroth is a combination of a human fetus and the tissue of an extraterrestrial lifeform known as Jenova. Shinra believed that Jenova was a Cetra (also known as “The Ancients”) and they had a scientist create Sephiroth with the being before learning that it was far from a Cetra. Jenova is a being that crash-landed on the planet thousands of years ago and tried to become a god over the planet. Learning this, Sephiroth developed a hatred for Shinra and humanity and decided to follow in his mother’s footsteps.

While Sephiroth’s turn to the dark side is extremely upsetting, the truth is that it is hard to blame him. He spent his entire life being forced to be a puppet for Shinra just to learn that they hid his identity from him the entire time. It is no wonder he wanted to follow in Jenova’s footsteps and see her plans come to fruition.
